How to Extend the Battery Life of Your Electronic Cigarette & Tips for Vapers away from E-cig Exploding

Today’s electronic cigarettes are packed with lithium ion cells. And while lithium-ion batteries last much longer than their predecessors, they still wear out and require replacement. Costs can add up if you have to buy new batteries often.
You will know when your battery needs replacement when there is a significant reduction in vapor volume even when the device is fully charged and you are using a fresh cartomizer.

A typical lithium-ion battery can give you 200-250 charge cycles. Some ecigs last up to 400 charges. With proper care, you can extend the life of your battery and ensure maximum performance before replacing it.
Here are a few tips on how to keep your e-cig battery in peak condition.

Use your electronic cigarette battery regularly

Lithium-ion batteries are designed for frequent use. The more they perform, the easier power flows through the cells. You don’t have to use your ecig daily but don’t leave it in storage for long periods either. Just like your mobile phones and iPods that run on lithium-ions, electronic cigarette batteries perform better when they are always on work mode.

Handle with care

We can be careless with regular cigarettes because it’s easy to just light up another stick. How many times have you dropped your cigarette while smoking or have an entire pack crushed in your jeans pocket? You cannot afford to be careless with electronic cigarettes.
Never put your e-cigarette in your pocket as lint can easily penetrate through the small openings and cause the switch to malfunction or prevent air from flowing properly.
Do not expose your ecig battery to direct sunlight, heat and water as these can dramatically reduce its lifespan.
Organize your ecig gear in a carry case to protect your batteries from dust and impact when you are on the move. Even a slight drop can cause e-liquid to leak into your battery or trigger a short circuit.

Do not completely drain your e-cig battery

Lithium-ions should not be drained below 20 percent. Waiting for your battery to go empty before charging can most certainly reduce its lifespan. After several uses, you’ll be able to get an idea on how long your battery will last. Do not wait for the LED tip to start blinking. When your battery is halfway through its full charge, you can begin recharging.
Think of your ecig battery as a vehicle. It’s much easier for a moving car to speed up than for a stationary car to start moving. Using the same principle, a lithium battery with some power left in it will charge better than one that is completely dead. Batteries that are fully drained have to work twice as hard to recharge, which can accelerate wear and tear.
If you hate waiting for your battery to fully charge, always keep a rotation of batteries in your kit. Most standard ecig kits contain at least two batteries to make it easy for users to switch between them during charging times.

Do not store empty or drained batteries

If you plan to put your batteries in storage for a long period, make sure that they have at least 70 percent charge. Ideally, charge them to full power beforehand. Storing them with low or empty power will cause them to drain a lot faster.
When your batteries are empty, they have to work harder to replenish power. And working harder can take a toll on battery life. This is the reason why manufacturers ship their electronic cigarette batteries fully charged.

Remove the cartomizer when ecig is not in use

As long as the cartomizer is connected to the battery, it continuously drains power even when you are not using your e-cig. If you are going away and won’t be able to vape for a long period, remove the cartomizer from the battery before putting them in storage. This will extend the interval between recharges and ultimately increase battery life.
If you are using an automatic battery, slightly unscrew the cartomizer from the battery every time you finish vaping. Leaving these components connected tightly will drain your e-cig much quicker.

Remove the battery from the charger right after a full charge

When charging your ecig for the first time, you should leave it on the charger for an extra hour after a full charge. But do not do this for succeeding charge cycles.
The indicator light on your USB charger will glow green or blue when your battery is fully charged. Once you see this light turn, remove the battery right away from the charger. This will prevent overcharging and overworking your battery. Although it seems convenient to leave your ecig charging overnight, we strongly advise against it.

Clean your battery terminals regularly

The point of contact between your ecig battery and cartomizer should always be kept clean. When you open your starter kit for the first time, you will notice that the battery terminals are sparkling gold and it’s easy to draw on the mouthpiece. But after several uses, dust and moisture will begin to accumulate on the threads and holes. The buildup of gunk can cause damage to the battery over time and plugged air holes can make it difficult to take a normal drag. If you do not clean your batteries regularly, it could eventually cause them to malfunction.
To clean your battery, get a cotton swab or alcohol pad and wipe down the contact points. Use a toothpick to clear the air holes.

Fire Safety Tips

There have been a few cases of electronic cigarettes exploding and causing small home fires, leading to fire chiefs issuing a warning on the dangers of charging electronic cigarettes. Here are some of the safety tips you should follow in order to prevent accidents:
  • Only use the charger supplied with the ecig kit
  • Do not mix and match components from different e-cig brands
  • Do not screw the battery to the charger too tightly (plug the charger into the power source first then gently screw the battery in until the light flashes)
  • Do not leave your ecig unattended when charging
  • Clean the battery pin and charger contact at least once a week with tissue or alcohol wipes
  • Remove the battery from the charger when fully charged
